Want to keep your eyes sharp? Two new studies show that eating more healthy' fatslike those found in olive oil, fish, and nutswhile foregoing trans fats found in many processed foods might help prevent age related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness in people over 65.
Both studies were published in the Archives of Ophthalmology. In one, researchers from the University of Sydney followed a group of 2,454 people for up to 10 years. Those who ate one serving of fish per week were 31% less likely to develop AMD than those who didn't; eating two servings of nuts each week lowered AMD risk by 35%.
The other study, out of the University of Melbourne, found that eating about 7 tablespoons of olive oil per week lowered late stage AMD risk by 50%. On the other hand, people who ate the most trans fats were 176% more likely to develop late stage AMD.
Some people are more likely to develop AMD, like those with a family history of the disease, seniors, women, people with light-colored eyes, smokers, and people with heart disease. Certain nutritional deficiencies have also been linked to a higher disease risk, while vitamins A, C, D, E, and zinc seem to help protect against it.
Since the eye contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, it follows that eating foods rich in these fats might help nourish the eyes. Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties, as well, which could also explain their protective role in eye health. Olive oil is rich in antioxidants which help prevent free radical damage to cells.
Trans fats, which are formed by adding hydrogen molecules to liquid fats to make them solid, have the opposite effects in the body; they lead to inflammation, promote free radical damage, and have been linked to heart disease, infertility, and an increased risk of some cancers. Trans fats occur naturally in some animal foods, but the biggest source is from processed foods like crackers, chips, peanut butter, baked goods, and popcorn.
When choosing foods, make sure they contain no hydrogenated oils, even if the label claims that the food is trans fat free. By law, food manufacturers can claim 'zero grams trans fats' if the product contains less than 0.5 grams of trans fats per serving; but watch out, if you eat more than the 13 chip serving size, you're sure to get more trans fats than you bargained for. - Comments: 0

Mouth: Teeth should be white and gums should be pink (unless they are naturally black). There should be no bumps in the mouth.Your dogshould not emitdoggy breath. Also check for build up if you see signs of redness on the gums or build up on the teeth they need to have their teeth cleaned. Normally every 6 months is good if you have a professional come to your house or go to them. You also want to do daily cleanings or in a pinch use dental treats (both you can get a wide range of at most pet stores)
Eyes: A healthy dog should have clear eyes with no discharge, crust,irritation/redness, should not be rubbing eyes with paw or on other objectsor cloudiness. All these signs may show a deeper problem.A trip to the vet would be good or at least a call. Take notice of what medications they give you so if there is a problem in the future you can order them through pet magazines or web-sites for much cheaper.
Ears: The inside of the ears should be pink, odorless, and free of dark-colored discharge. There should be no signs of tenderness, pain, or itching. Its normal for a dog to scratch but if its prolonged or excessive you need to check to seeif there is a problem.There are a large amount of ear cleaners just make sure to use one without fragrance. If cleaning the ears doesn't seem to be working within a week its a good idea to go to the vet to see if there is a problem (again take notice of the medications)
Weight: If you cannot feel the dog's ribs, they may be overweight. If the ribs are very pronounced, however, thedog could be underweight. Check with your vet to see what the right weight range should be for your dog at their age.Also ask what kind of food they should be on and how much they should have.
Paws: Check thepaws for damage to the pads, in-between toes and for objects that may be hiding. Ifyour dog is licking, biting or limping check for cracks in the pads, objects in the pads or in-between the toes and nails for a break.Make sure the nails are trimmed and in good condition.
Bottom: Make sure the anal area is clean, dry, and free of bumps and welts.If your dog is rubbing/draggingtheir bottom on the floora lot they may need to go in to the groomer or vet for a draining of the anal glads/sacks.
Skin: Use a comb to examine the skin. Look for "flea dirt" ( resembles grains of pepper). Skin should be free of odor, grease, scabs, flakes, and other irritations. If your not sure call your vet to see what they think your next move should be or what they think you need for your dog.
Coat: Check the coat for bald spots, dullness, and/or excessive, unwarranted shedding. Adding Vitamin E or Fish Oil capsules can brighten the coat and make it healthier. Some people like to give their dogs a raw egg with a meal each day to help the dog's coat but I suggest you use Eggbeaters or something like that.
